To Denmark in a minicamper
WITH THE MINI CAMPER TO DENMARK
Mieke was tempted by Danish hygge, the stunning cliffs of Møns Klint, and a daughter who was eager to go shopping in trendy Copenhagen. So, they spent about ten days over the Easter holidays heading to Denmark. Spoiler alert: it was totally worth it! Read all about their adventures and tips here.
PIT STOP IN HAMBURG
After a two-day stop in Hamburg at the Buchholz city campsite and enjoying this vibrant city, we drive for two hours to Puttgarden to catch the ferry to Rødby, Denmark. The crossing takes less than 45 minutes – just enough time to snack on our 'Kaiserbrötchen' and head back to the van. And then we’re officially in Denmark, yes! We drive along peaceful country roads to the island of Møn, of course to visit the famous cliffs.
UNDER A STUNNING STARLIT SKY
Camp Møns Klint is our first stop in Denmark — and it’s love at first sight! We're in the middle of a nature park, with a designated stargazing platform as it’s also a ‘Dark Sky Area’. What a place! Fully rested, we set out the next morning. Right beside our pitch, we join the 14-kilometre ‘Cliff King’s Kingdom’ hiking trail, which links all the highlights of the park and was voted one of Europe’s most beautiful trails. The weather is perfect and we enjoy stunning views of million-year-old cliffs, turquoise waters and enchanting forests. A top day!

PICTURE-PERFECT CASTLE
Via Stevns Klint and its incredibly picturesque church, we head north toward Copenhagen. We’ll be camping in Hillerød, a cosy town with a direct train connection to the capital – and home to Frederiksborg Castle, a picture-perfect palace straight out of a historical film.
Hillerød Camping is one of the cosiest campsites we've ever stayed at: tropical flowers among the vans, charming curtains in the kitchen area, and bathrooms stocked with cotton swabs and perfumes. And don’t forget the outdoor showers under palm trees!

SHOPPING IN COPENHAGEN
From Hillerød we take the train to the capital – a perfect way to visit Copenhagen without driving the van into the busy city or hunting for parking. And what a wonderful city it is! From the picturesque Nyhavn with its colorful houses and boats to the rebellious and artsy Christiania district, we love every moment! And our teenage daughter is in heaven in the shopping streets.

OUTDOOR CAPITAL
After a day in the city, we head for more nature in Jutland — but not before stopping in the fairytale city of Odense, where Hans Christian Andersen wrote his famous stories. Charming streets, cute shops, and a colourful food market at Storms Pakhus – definitely one to add to your list.

Silkeborg becomes our home base for a few days. As Denmark’s outdoor capital, everything is possible here: hiking, cycling, watersports… We choose the award-winning Silkeruten, a 12-kilometre trail through forest, town and lakeside. Highlight? A circular boardwalk through the lake — a perfect photo spot. We stay at Terrassen Camping, a bit retro, but with unbeatable views and smack in the middle of the outdoor zone.

ALL THE COLOURS OF THE RAINBOW
From here, we again take the train to a major city — this time, trendy Aarhus. We start our day at the ARoS Art Museum, with its rainbow walkway on the rooftop – perfect for Instagram! In the afternoon, we step back in time at Den Gamle By, an open-air museum full of charming alleyways and costumed actors. It’s like walking through history.
THE MOST BEAUTIFUL SUNSET FROM OUR VAN
We’re now at the end of our Denmark road trip and drive all the way south to the Wadden Sea island of Rømø, spending our final days there. Oasen Rømø is a peaceful camper paradise by a lake with over 250 spots. Brand new, with excellent facilities and so quiet! Just 5 minutes away is Sønderstrand, one of two beaches on Rømø where you can drive your vehicle right onto the sand. It’s amazing to cruise along the shoreline in our van. And in the evening, it becomes even more magical — from inside our van, we watch the sky light up in the most stunning shades of pink and orange. What a sunset!

Denmark won our hearts with its natural beauty, enchanting castles, cosy towns and excellent camper options. Highly recommended!
